As crooner Andy Williams sang, the holiday season is “the most wonderful time of the year.” This year’s holiday season is fast approaching. Time to dust off ye olde thinking cap – not to mention all those holiday decorations – and set about making this season the best ever for yourself and your family and friends, young and old alike.
Send Greeting Cards
Everyone likes to know that others are thinking about them. Greeting cards are a great way to touch base with family and friends – especially those who live far away. Everyone can get into the act, helping to sign them and address the envelopes. On the other hand, if you’re on your own with regard to sending cards and want to make things easy on yourself, check out websites like Blue Mountain and CrossCards that offer a huge variety of free electronic greeting cards that you can send directly to your recipients’ email inboxes.
Light Candles
Candles are part of almost every religion’s winter holiday. So whether you light yours as part of an Advent wreath, a Menorah, a Kinara or simply as attractive accent pieces throughout your home, lighting candles is an easy and inexpensive activity that everyone enjoys participating in. Candles also add brightness, meaning and fragrance to your holidays, especially when scented with pine, cinnamon, vanilla, cranberry or other holiday-themed oils.
Host a Holiday Movie Night
Invite your friends and family members for an evening of nostalgic Christmas movies. If you don’t already have your favorites on DVD, a quick Google search for the titles you want will show you where to buy them for very little money. Some Christmas suggestions sure to entertain viewers of all ages include:
- ”A Christmas Carol” (the 1951 black-and-white version starring Alastair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge is the classic)
- ”The Bishop’s Wife” starring Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven
- ”It’s a Wonderful Life” starring Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed and Henry Travers as the indomitable angel Clarence trying to earn his wings
- ”White Christmas” starring Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney
- ”Miracle on 34th Street” starring an impossibly young Natalie Wood as the young girl whose nonbelief in Santa gets turned around by a derelict (Edmund Gwenn) who claims to be Kris Kringle
- ”Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” starring Jim Carrey as the grumpy green Grinch
- ”Elf” starring Will Ferrell
