You probably remember that famous quote from the classic 1942 movie “Casablanca.” And even if you don’t recall the name of the actor who uttered those well-known words — Humphrey Bogart — you’d likely recognize his face.
Watching clips from familiar, classic films can temporarily ease the burden of dementia as people enjoy laughing together and sharing memories.
AlmaVia of San Francisco is pleased to co-sponsor the upcoming Movie Moments at the Vogue, an interactive film program created specifically for individuals with dementia and their caregivers. This unique event will take place at the historic Vogue Theatre on Tuesday, May 23, from 10 a.m. to noon.
Stimulating Creativity and Discussion
The Movie Moments at the Vogue event provides a creative outlet and discussion opportunity for people with memory loss. Volunteers from the local neighborhood will join participants to view, discuss and reminisce about curated film scenes combined with movie trivia.
By viewing familiar movie clips, participants discuss their long-term memories relating to the themes of work, family, love and well-known Hollywood stars. In early presentations of the Movie Moments program, organizers found that individuals with dementia often immediately respond to certain scenes from films.
The program is intended to reduce the stigma associated with memory loss and allow family members, neighborhood volunteers and others to see people with dementia as individuals who can contribute to a meaningful dialogue.
Sharing the Benefits of Classic Movies
Movie Moments at the Vogue is presented as a partnership with the San Francisco Neighborhood Theater Foundation and is organized by Elder Care Alliance, the Ray Dolby Brain Health Center of California Pacific Medical Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Association of Northern California and Northern Nevada.
Dr. Catherine Madison of the Ray Dolby Brain Health Center noted that when individuals with dementia participate in singing familiar songs from old movies, they can experience enhanced memories of their own lives along with reduction of anxiety. The benefits extend to other participants as well, she said.
