Heart Healthy Dinner and Boot-Scootin’ Chili Cook-Off

AlmaVia of Camarillo had a delicious — and healthy — month in September with a chili cook-off and a special dinner.

Heart Health

On Sept. 14, about 25 people attended Heart Health, a free dinner and seminar to help people live a healthy life. Dr. Michael Jamison, an internal medicine cardiologist, gave an educational presentation on heart health, including diet and exercise tips. He also talked about the importance of preventive measures to protect against heart disease and stroke.

Marketing Coordinator Ashley Fajardo noted that a mix of residents and members of the public attended the event, which featured a buffet-style dinner with a choice of chicken or salmon with vegetables and mashed potatoes.

Boot-Scootin’ Chili Cook-Off

More than 100 residents, friends, family, members of the public and staff members had a great time at the Sept. 21 Boot-Scootin’ Chili Cook-Off Fundraiser benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association. The event featured a pie-eating contest, games, pony rides for children, a silent auction and raffle, and a beer tasting. Admission was $5 per ticket, with a senior rate of $3, and proceeds were donated to the charity.

Chili Cook-Off competitors paid $35 to enter the contest and were asked to bring samples of their pre-made chili for attendees. About 10 different varieties of chili were offered, Ashley said. Select Home Care took the top prize, a trophy and gift card.

In the pie-eating contest, Jose Ruiz of the AlmaVia of Camarillo dining staff and Ruben Gallardo of Realty Executives won the top honors.

Raising Money for a Good Cause

The Boot-Scootin’ Chili Cook-Off benefited the Alzheimer’s Association, a global organization that advocates for individuals with Alzheimer’s and advances research and support. Across the country, local chapters staff a 24-hour helpline, run support groups, connect individuals with clinical trials and offer a variety of educational programming. The Alzheimer’s Association also maintains a comprehensive website with resources for individuals with Alzheimer’s and their care partners.

In addition, the organization is responsible for the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s to raise funds and awareness about Alzheimer’s. AlmaVia of Camarillo is proud to support the important work of the Alzheimer’s Association.
